Sprouts: Sept 8-10 (Core)

Updated: Sep 11

This week we revisited our classroom promise and signed our names. Students referenced our promises throughout the week and I supported them in making connections to our first morning circle lesson around ‘discipline’. At TSOP, this refers to the ability to accept guidance from our classmates and elders in order to learn what is right and what is wrong. We will be sharing more on our teachings at our Parent Community Meeting on September 22nd.

Each morning the class engaged in get-to-know-you activities as we continue to learn about our community. Reading with friends has been a favourite activity as well. We made space to decorate our new weather folders, which will support the students in learning about a bar graph and how to read it, this year.

Our class went on our first ‘Tuesday Trek’ this week and took a stroll through the park over to an elderberry bush. The students got to learn how to identify this plant and we then foraged a few berries to taste, inspect, and to create with. Each student drew their own elderberry bush and used the berry juice to ‘paint’ their picture. Skin and seeds from the berries were noticed on the paper, along with different colours, dependent on the ripeness of the berry.

Today we revisited our learning list from last week and decided that we wanted to start with learning more about trees. After reading the ‘Magical Mystery of Trees’ students gained knowledge around tree parts, types, how trees make food, and where they can be found in the world. They learned the difference between broad-leaf and conifer trees and then we went out back to find some of each! We did a tree walk around the backyard, naming the trees that were present. We also observed the apple tree just outside our gate and the students suggested that we make apple sauce this year. They will be working towards that over the next couple of weeks as the apples become fully ready for us.

Our new Sprout students got to make their drums with Jessica today! They will be ready to be birthed at our Fall Equinox celebration on Wednesday.

Recess fun. 💚
