This week we began learning about Mythical Creatures - as per the Sprouts’ latest request. They have been engaging in lots of imaginative pay with their dragon toys lately and also mentioned their excitement for the backyard fairies to return in the Spring. Some wanted to learn about other mythical creatures such as mermaids, unicorns, Sasquatch and more. We dove in with some read-alouds this week, accompanied by a vocabulary activity, card game, and new bingo throughout our project period. Everyone is excited to learn more!
On Tuesday, the long-awaited wet felting lesson took place! Magan joined us in the afternoon and the Sprouts made multiple felt balls. It was a hands-on process as the students learned all of the steps to wet felt. Once the balls dry, we will use these pieces to support our Mythical Creature inquiry.
Oakley made his Food Magic project on Wednesday, giving the Sprouts the opportunity to try some fruity creations! Oakley put his own spin on “Honey Butter Bread” and made everyone their own animal creation. Yum!
As we have completed the introductions of all 16 tipi pole teachings, we are moving on to the 7 Sacred Grandfather teachings within Morning Circle. Three of these teachings are review as they are part of the 16 as well. This week we reviewed RESPECT and one of its symbols: bison. We revisited how respecting nature looks like using all of what we forage/gather and being mindful of that. Students shared examples of respect they’ve given, received or observed. In their portfolios, each Sprout wrote out our statement for Respect and illustrated an example.
We will not be having Mystery Bag on Monday as we are welcoming our Pottery teachers to TSOP that afternoon. Though students will be wearing aprons, please send your child in clothes that can get dirty.
