We started our outdoor day with our morning circle under our shelter to provide a break from Wind and Rain. Many students ran out their energy and we spent a good chunk of time making lots of wild and silly noises together. We filled ourselves up with our Seven Directions Song using our rhythm sticks in between verses, then pulled an animal card with our eyes closed this week. In sit spots, students introspected (focused on their inside self) and noticed all kinds of amazing things about their energy.
We headed inside for our snack and story time. Today we read "If you are thankful and you know it" and sang along to the book. After snack, we suited up for our morning hike. Today was an assessment day, so everyone learned that today they were leading the hike. Everyone pointed out the plants and animals they knew and I was very impressed with their recall. We noticed this morning that Oakley's cough was back also, so we foraged our special tea ingredients again: Colt's Foot, Mullein, Rose Hips and this time we added Cedar for it's high vitamin C content. Extra tea has gone home with Oakley to support. There were many puddles and students had a great time finding them and jumping in them.
While inside for lunch, we prepped our special tea, and pulled corn kernels off two of our cobs from last year to make pop corn as a special snack. Students played games and enjoyed themselves in the dry environment. We found a BIG spider in one of our boots this morning and unfortunately in our rush to be away from the Spider, our Spider friend died. We placed the Spider under our microscope to have a look close up at all the important parts...we are hoping understanding will diminish fears.
For our afternoon, we stayed in the backyard and focused our attention on fire building. During our morning hike I showed students where to find dry firewood in the rain. We made two big piles under the Spruce Trees, and collected them on our way back. We prepped our fire pit discussing the necessary safety precautions and set our fire alight!
Our day ended with Walky Talky playtime that I utilized for assessment without anyone becoming wise to my strategy.
Enjoy a fabulous weekend everyone!
