Thursday

Our morning circle was smooth and the children lead the way. There were many great animal messages.

This week we began learning about first aid which started with knowing some basics about the human body. We learned today that we have bones that give us form, a digestive system that connects our mouth to our anus (though many called it a butt hole lol) and a brain that helps us think and learn. We started reading The Body Book and will continue into next week as well.
After free play, we headed outside to explore all the things. We measured the sap in our bucket, removed the tap and bucket from the Maple that wasn't giving any sap. We measured another 7 cm of sap collected. We filtered it and added the sap to our collection bucket which is nearly full now! We remained outdoors for the majority of the day until the rain was heavier and returned for a later lunch. Everyone had a blast looking at plants growing up in the community garden at Kiwanis park, exploring the Duck habitat, and standing on the ice in various spaces. We found Pussy Willows blooming and Willow tree buds along with Maple buds too! We also got to the playground which was a great time had by all.
On our return to the school, we dove into some medicines that we foraged on our hike. All had medicinal uses: Mullein, Plantain, Willow, Cedar and Spruce Sap. This is an image you can quiz your kiddos with to see if they can identify each item we collected today. Some may also remember what they are used for too!

After exploring our medicinal Plant friends, we dove into our school Hospital Play Centre! Everyone loved it and I got to play too so students knew what to do. Ending this playtime was hard and I know this will be a staple in the days to come to deepen student learning about the body and medicines that help us heal. There was one baby born, some twins discovered in Oakley's tummy, many broken bones healed and some practical supports for stings and scrapes. We also got to use our blood pressure and heart rate cuff before and after activity to see what happens.
Friday
Our morning began with car creation directed by Gordie! We created some axels and wheels with buttons, sticks and straws.
While we waited for hot glue to harden we had our morning circle. We moved our energy and enjoyed our animal cards.

We read our morning story while we had snack then had races with our cars (video above).

After our races we suited up for the outdoors. As the weather is becoming warmer we are spending more and more time outside. Today we stayed out for 2.5 hours!! First we recorded our sap level, and filtered the sap into our collection bucket, then we headed to the park for lots of adventure and play.
After our adventures we came back inside, ate our lunches, played a quick game and tidied up.
