Week 6 - October 12-16
This week we finalized our school promise upholding our four foundational teachings of Humility, Honesty, Discipline and Respect. Students chose their own statement that appealed to their personal goals for learning for the year and signed their names to our collective agreement. This agreement is posted on the wall in the main classroom, and a laminated copy will be sent home with each student this week.
Our week was consumed by gratitude feast preparations on Tuesday and Wednesday, which included time in the garden to harvest carrots and onions. We were able to dig up two red onions and many Egyptian Walking Onions, however all the carrots had gone to seed, so we learned that seeds on carrots means there is no usable root to use. Pam shared with students about the bulbs and tap roots that were in our garden with a noticing activity and garden check up outside. Our feast was enjoyed on Wednesday. We could have heard a pin drop in the room! Everyone present loved their feast foods and really enjoyed it all. There aren't many photos of preparations because we we had all teacher hands on deck supporting students to make gluten free sourdough buns, hamburgers, french fries, rainbow salad and ice cream cookies. We had many left overs that went home with students that chose them. Special thank you to Lola and Oakley who led the table dressing charge and ensured everyone had name tags, plates, cups and cutlery.
After our feast, we ventured outside for LOTS of play time Wednesday afternoon as a reward for working so diligently to create the recipes for our feast. We also played a new game Emma shared called Behind The Green Glass Door which is a group guessing game that the students absolutely LOVED!!
On Thursday students learned our 6-2-2 money rule for the profits from share the magic day that paid for our feast. 6 parts of the money in went to our feast ($120), 2 parts went to our Materials Fund for the next feast and share the magic day ($40), and 2 parts went to pay for a donation to the food bank. Jessica shared a participatory story lesson about collecting all the ingredients for chili, dessert and snacks that totalled $40!! Everyone loved the opportunity to pretend shop together with actions and sounds.
Thursday afternoon, Emma prepared an epic Ninja Obstacle Course for the students to celebrate their learning and engage in more cooperative time together. Obstables included hopscotch, balancing a wooden egg on a spoon, potato sack races, bowling down the slide, hopping on the logs, tree climbing and the ninja line. Everyone had a blast and received a special award for completing the obstacle course at the end of our time together. Our beginner Ninjas are the best!
On Friday, Aliyah taught calendar to Adriana and Jessica with a LOT of laughs! Jessica and Adriana had a great time pretending to be students. We concluded the day with crafting and epic lego play!
We hope everyone had a great weekend!
