Sprouts: Oct 6-8 (Core)

This week we continued exploring leaves through comparison of size and shape. The students used a variety of measuring tools to record length and distance in a chart. They also explored capacity through a sink/float activity. Throughout these activities they got to practice individually following steps and then incorporating teamwork skills to complete a task as well. The Sprouts thoroughly enjoyed these activities and are looking forward to similar explorations.

Students have been practicing sounding out words through exercising their phonetic skills. Our focus has been on short vowel sounds: particularly a and i. Give your child a 3 letter short a or short i word (ie. cat, map, lip, dig) and ask them to sound it out using their arm strategy. Our older students are practicing using their ‘stretch it out’ strategies for longer words as well.

We used the rest of our foraged leaves from the week to create ‘crunchy leaf’ pictures. The students also wanted to make ‘hand turkeys’ as found in one of our Autumn books. Both creations turned out super cute!

Mystery Bag Monday will be starting back up on Monday, October 20th. I will let you know who will be taking the first turn, next week. This week we revisited what MMB is, reviewed the concept of asking a question and practiced the process with myself as the Mystery Bag holder. The Sprouts are looking forward to getting back into this practice.

Oakley’s mom graciously donated natural play dough to our classroom, from her business called Oak & Lo. She makes beautiful play dough without toxins or harmful scents. The ones she donated are scent free and have been coloured using plant matter. Thanks Sarah!!

Today we had a wonderful time at Kustermans farm! We spent the morning taking part in a guided tour and learning about pumpkins. Students got to pick a pumpkin to take home. We also took part in a scavenger hunt to learn about the animals on the farm and worked together to complete the corn maze. Students enjoyed a fun afternoon exploring the rest of the farm’s offerings! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. Reminder - we are closed Monday. ☺️
