Saplings Core October 14&15

No new teaching this week with our second short week in a row. We will resume with our Number 5 lesson next week.

Our day began with our morning routine. Students were engaged and earned many pun stickers and completed their tasks within the hour. Our writing/typing this morning was a prompt for recount writing from our trip and about our feast. We began discussing reasons for our writing and how to share an idea with examples and/or items relevant to the topic.

Once we were complete, we discussed what would be best for our day: playing a game now, or getting started in the kitchen now.

It was determined that working in the kitchen could come first so we can have free time in the afternoon to play games once cooking/baking is complete.

In the kitchen we prepped zucchini for zucchini bread, then created the batter and mixed it all in. We also cut and cleaned out all the squash from our garden so we could roast it in the oven for our soup. Lemons were prepped for our Sprout helpers for lemonade as well.

After lunch, we continued working in the kitchen by baking the zucchini bread. After, we went out to the garden to harvest our coleslaw ingredients.

We ended our day playing cribbage wars....and of course with a delicious oatmeal chocolate chip cookie.

On Wednesday, we got straight to work after reading about gift and market economy from Braiding Sweetgrass. We learned that we are participating in a gift economy by growing a garden and harvesting without needing to work for money to buy the groceries required from a store.

Afterwards we got into the kitchen to prep the feast! We had soup to finish, salad to create, and potatoes to chop. All jobs were organized on the board and everyone chose what they wanted to contribute. I am very proud of our Saplings for the amazing job they did on the feast. I am proud of our Sprouts for delicious lemonade. It was a delicious day with so many full bellies as a result of our hard work last year.

For more pictures of our feast, please check out the Sprout weekly reflection for this week. My hands were full and Courtney had the camera <3

We ended the afternoon with rest and play. Some were wanting rest after all the activity and others played more games. The day ended with another cookie! Only two more left before we need to make more <3

Create a beautiful weekend!
