This week we focused on the human body: discussing the functions of our microbiome and exploring the Skelton. Students learned (or were reminded) how to “feed the good guys” and how too much sugar can give the “bad guys” too much power, leaving us feeling weak, tired, grumpy and more. We discussed real life scenarios including Halloween, and how to make supportive decisions for our body. We also spoke about ways to celebrate Halloween that don’t involve candy. Students shared examples such as: going out for dinner, watching movies, baking healthier treats with a Halloween theme, making crafts and dressing up. There was an emphasis on enjoying the holiday in the ways that your family does, while making informed decisions about candy consumption. I encouraged them to be teachers in their home by respectfully sharing insights and suggestions. Students also enjoyed piecing together a Skelton, which includes many labelled bones. We briefly discussed names and areas found. Though they’ve brought their Skelton home, we have one in the classroom to continue to support our learning.
We continued expanding our learning in literacy around short and long vowel sounds, still focusing on the ‘a’. Students tried ‘spider writing’ and participating in a sorting game. We worked on our number bonds this week as well and made space to add our new teaching of ‘Faith’ to our portfolio.
Today everyone thoroughly enjoyed Spirit Day! Many came dressed in costumes and we carved/decorated pumpkins. Students worked in small groups and seeds were roasted and snacked on throughout the day.
We also made fun ghost crafts with paint and squeegees! Super cute.
Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable Halloween! 🎃
