This week the Sprouts chose to hang their finished bird houses all on the same tree; creating a “bird hotel”. We got our binoculars out and kept a look out for new bird friends, both from the coat room and when outside. The students have yet to see any, but heard many bird calls. During our Project Period, students continued their bird studies; drawing diagrams, labelling bird anatomy, identifying bird feathers, measuring our bird houses before they were hung, and learning about different beak shapes and uses.
We continue to use our Over & Under learning poster as the students explore winter homes and activities of animals. Some birds and tree hole homes were added this week, as well as grass under the snow.
The number line continues to be a helpful tool for students to build on their numeracy knowledge with. Our morning sign-in consists of a question around the number line and is expanded on when we sit down for morning snack. Students are adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing by finding the connections between all of these operations. Finding half, doubling and even tripling have become fun challenges for the Sprouts.
Last week I spoke to the class about Badge Work. I’ve attached the page from our Parent Package for those who may need a review. Some students jumped right into it this week. Lola was the first to present today and did a wonderful job! She took time to practice beforehand, allowing herself to present independently. Way to go, Lola! 👏🏼
We will begin Food Magic projects next week.
Instead of drum circles, lately the students have been enjoying musical movement with scarves. I play some instrumental songs where they are challenged to flow with the rhythm. They always have a blast and get to move lots of energy. Another favourite is Freeze Dance.
It will be Leroy’s turn for Mystery Bag on Monday.
