Sprouts: Sept 15-17 (Core)

Continuing with our tree inquiry, we focused on fruit this week as we move closer to foraging apples for apple sauce making. The Sprouts worked in groups to sort fruit and veggie cards using the knowledge they had. We went around to each group to discuss and learn more. Students learned that a fruit is anything coming from a plant, that has a seed inside of it. A vegetable, is any other part of the plant that is edible such as: leaves, stems, buds or roots. With this information, we discussed fruits and vegetables in our lunches the following day and made a list of what was found.

We revisited our learning about tree parts from last week and added “fruit” to our tree part knowledge as we observed our apple tree. The class worked to piece the parts together and paint an apple tree. They then had the opportunity to create their own apple tree within their portfolio and much creativity and individuality surfaced! Today each student labelled their creation with tree part names.

Since painting was a huge hit, we decided to continue the trend today. Using foraged *ground* apples, the students took part in some apple stamping. We discussed why ground apples made the most sense to be used for a painting project (as to not to waste any we may need for apple sauce) and we made sure to give them left over non-painted pieces, back to our animal friends by leaving them in the yard.

We made it over to our tree climbing spot on our Tuesday Trek where forts were built and trunks were hugged.

Today we held a beautiful Fall Equinox and drum birthing ceremony in the backyard where Pam joined us to birth her drum as well. Students learned the meaning of the word “equinox” (equal) and how days will become shorter this season. They also received fire safety guidance and we all sang our school song “Oh Great Spirit” to end the ceremony. It was a beautiful start to the new season. 🍂

On Wednesdays we end the day with mindfulness and/or feel-good activities: we call it ‘Well-Being Wednesday’. This week the students chose a dance party and a story, chosen by Lola. The activities definitely made our beings, well! 🥰
